Ducted + Ductless Mitsubishi Heat Pump Upgrade in Edina, MN
This Edina project involved replacing an older furnace and air conditioning system with a Mitsubishi Electric heat pump solution designed to improve comfort, efficiency, and control throughout the home.
The new system combines a ducted Mitsubishi air handler for the main living areas with a ductless high-wall unit for the addition, creating a more flexible comfort solution tailored to how the home is actually used.
The result is a high-performance cold-climate system with improved airflow, zoned comfort, electric backup heat, and modern smart controls.
A Custom Comfort System for the Main Home and Addition
This project required more than a basic equipment replacement. The home needed a system that could serve the primary ducted space effectively while also delivering better comfort to an added living area that benefited from its own dedicated indoor unit.
VisionAiry Heating & Cooling designed a Mitsubishi Electric system built around a multi-position air handler, a ductless high-wall unit, an indoor branch box, and electric backup heat to create a more complete and adaptable comfort solution.
The installation also included upgraded filtration, new transition fittings, humidifier reconnection, condensate management, surge protection, and control integration for long-term performance and day-to-day usability.
Main Home Comfort
A Mitsubishi ducted air handler now serves the primary living space with improved airflow and modern heat pump performance.
Addition Zone Control
A dedicated Mitsubishi high-wall unit provides targeted comfort for the addition without relying on the main ducted system alone.
Integrated System Design
Branch box distribution, backup heat, controls, filtration, and layout details were coordinated into one complete comfort system.
BEFORE THE UPGRADE
Older Equipment and Uneven Comfort Challenges
Before the upgrade, the home relied on older heating and cooling equipment that no longer matched the comfort goals of the property. Like many retrofit projects, the challenge was not simply replacing equipment, but improving how the overall system served different areas of the home.
The addition required its own comfort strategy, while the main house needed updated indoor equipment, cleaner transitions, and a more modern approach to heating and cooling performance.
Older furnace and air conditioning equipment
Main home and addition had different comfort needs
Opportunity for better zoning and flexibility
Need for upgraded filtration and airflow transitions
Desire for improved controls and app connectivity
THE INSTALLATION
A Mitsubishi Multi-Zone System Built for Flexibility and Year-Round Comfort
The installation included a Mitsubishi SVZ multi-position air handler paired with an MXZ outdoor heat pump and a dedicated MSZ-GX high-wall unit for the addition. The system was designed to provide efficient cooling, strong shoulder-season heating, and reliable cold-weather support with electric backup heat.
To support long-term performance, the project also included a branch box, upgraded return configuration, 4-inch media filtration, new supply and return transitions, line-hide coverage, surge protection, and a full controls setup with MHK2 and Kumo Cloud connectivity.
Ducted Air Handler Upgrade
The existing furnace was replaced with a Mitsubishi SVZ air handler mounted on a raised return base with upgraded return and filtration details.
Dedicated Addition Comfort
A Mitsubishi MSZ-GX high-wall unit was installed to provide focused heating and cooling for the addition.
Clean Mechanical Integration
Branch box placement, electrical upgrades, condensate management, humidifier reconnection, and line-set routing were completed for a clean finished system.
ZONED COMFORT
Why This Home Benefited from Both Ducted and Ductless Equipment
Not every part of a home is best served the same way. In this project, the main house was well suited for a ducted air handler, while the addition benefited from its own dedicated high-wall unit.
That combination allows for better comfort control, improved efficiency, and a more tailored solution than forcing one system approach across every area of the home.
Better comfort in the addition
Improved flexibility for different spaces
More precise temperature control
Stronger overall system performance
Designed around the actual layout of the home
PROJECT RESULTS
More Precise Comfort with Better Zoning, Better Airflow, and Modern System Control
The completed system gives the homeowners a more versatile comfort solution designed around how the home is actually laid out and used. The main living areas now benefit from a modern ducted heat pump system, while the addition has its own dedicated indoor unit for more targeted control.
This type of project reflects VisionAiry Heating & Cooling’s focus on engineered comfort, thoughtful retrofit design, and clean installation standards that go beyond simple equipment replacement.
