COMMON QUESTIONS

Heat Pump & Mini-Split FAQ

Straight answers to the questions Minnesota homeowners ask most before moving forward with a heat pump or ductless system.

PRICING

Typical Project Ranges

Every install includes load calculation, 500 PSI pressure test, vacuum decay test, dedicated surge protection, PVC line hide, full commissioning, and a 12-year parts and labor warranty. These aren’t cut-rate numbers because this isn’t cut-rate work.

Most projects are quoted in detail through the instant quote tool or after a home visit. No pressure. No obligation.

COLD CLIMATE PERFORMANCE

Yes — if it’s the right equipment installed correctly. Standard heat pumps struggle in extreme cold. Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat systems are specifically engineered for cold climates and can deliver full heating capacity down to 5°F and continue operating well below that. I’ve been installing these systems in Minnesota homes since 2014 and they perform reliably through our winters when properly sized and installed.

Not necessarily — it depends on your home and goals. A cold-climate ductless system can often handle all your heating and cooling on its own. For homes with existing ductwork and a gas furnace, a dual fuel setup (heat pump + furnace backup) is sometimes the most practical approach. I’ll tell you honestly which makes more sense for your specific situation — I’m not going to push you toward a system you don’t need.

Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat systems are rated to operate down to -13°F. At Minnesota’s typical winter temperatures, these systems maintain strong heating output. The key is proper sizing — an undersized system will struggle regardless of how good the equipment is.

THE INSTALLATION PROCESS

Most single and two-zone ductless installs are completed in one day. Larger multi-zone systems or ducted installations typically take two to three days. I’ll give you a realistic timeline during the estimate process so you can plan accordingly.

Yes — I’ll need access to your home throughout the installation. I’ll also walk you through the system operation before I leave so you’re comfortable using it from day one.

Yes, always. Permit requirements vary by municipality but I handle the permitting process as part of every installation. If a contractor tells you permits aren’t necessary for this type of work, that’s a red flag.

Yes, but minimal. A ductless installation requires a small penetration through an exterior wall — typically 2.5 to 3 inches — for the line set connecting the indoor and outdoor units. I use PVC line hide to cover and protect the exterior line set on every install.

REBATES

Rebate programs change frequently, but Minnesota homeowners currently have access to several incentives including federal tax credits and utility rebates through Xcel Energy and other providers. I stay current on available programs and will walk you through what applies to your project during the estimate. The Financing & Rebates page on this site also has current information.

ABOUT VISIONAIRY

Because they’re the best product for cold-climate applications like Minnesota, and I’ve spent over a decade learning exactly how to install them properly. Installing one brand means I know every nuance of the equipment — how to size it, how to design the system around a specific home, and how to commission it correctly. Contractors who install every brand under the sun don’t have that depth. Specialization is the point.

Yes. VisionAiry Heating & Cooling is fully licensed and insured in Minnesota. I’m also a Mitsubishi Electric Elite Diamond Contractor — the highest installer designation Mitsubishi offers, which requires factory training, ongoing certification, and accountability to installation standards most contractors never pursue.

Minneapolis, St. Paul, and the surrounding Twin Cities metro — including Edina, Bloomington, Eagan, Minnetonka, Plymouth, Maple Grove, Woodbury, Stillwater, Lake Elmo, White Bear Lake, and nearby communities.

The easiest first step is the Instant Estimate tool — it takes a few minutes and gives you a realistic ballpark for your project without any commitment. If you’d prefer to talk first, call 612-772-0485 or use the contact form to schedule a consultation.

David installed our new fully electric multi-zone heat pump system, mixed ducted/ductless to replace old AC & gas furnace. The work was thorough, detailed, and neat. David went over and above to keep us comfortable, resolved some historic oddities in our HVAC system, and provided support with app controls. Communication and admin support regarding scheduling, rebates, financing, permitting etc. was all very clear & handled quickly. All around quality experience, good folks!

I worked with David at VisionAiry Heating and Cooling for the installation of a new heat pump and furnace. The first thing that impressed me about him was the lack of pressure and his high level of honesty. He didn’t try to “sell me” on anything - he was honest about the state of my heating system and answered all of my questions patiently. This all made me feel I could trust him. As we worked toward a plan, he was willing to talk me through things over and over, and was excellent at communicating. When it came time for the install, everything went well! He installed the furnace one day and the heat pump next - they look and work great! The team was thorough and the system works great. Super happy with this team and would highly recommend!

David was punctual and took the time to explain what was needed, how he would do it and was such a joy to work with! He had to make multiple trips out to my place as we uncovered other electrical things that needed to be fixed first and he was always kind and brought a good energy to the situation when I was feeling stressed. I've told all my Minneapolis friends and neighbors that if they need a bathroom fan or stove vent properly vented that they HAVE to work with David. I'll continue to sing his praises haha 🙂

With boiler heating and no duct work in our house we have been looking to get a mini split system installed to provide some AC. We had it quoted from numerous companies big and small but the price always was too steep. After contacting David and having many back and forth emails as well as him visiting our house the final quote was the most competitive. It is one thing to know what you are doing but it is another to actually care about what you are doing and David has both. From first contact to the finished job David was forthright and honest on everything but also provided a high level of competency and quality for doing the job. I could not be happier with the whole process from beginning to end and highly endorse him for any work he does.
